The Hermeneutics of Religion in an Existentialist Reading

Abstract

Religion as a norm is a divine message for humanity, transcending time and place, and the arena for the realization of this norm is humankind's worldly life. Life in this world involves constantly changing events; therefore, religion's capacity to address novel issues is essential for its actualization in the here and now. This article seeks to explore an interpretation of religion made possible by hermeneutics, which recognizes the human being as the understander of the text. Furthermore, drawing on the approach of existentialist philosophers from the nineteenth century onward—and the significance they accord to humans as beings in a state of "becoming"—this article aims to present an interpretation of religion that offers a distinct assessment of its role in addressing issues for which there are no direct textual proofs. This approach ultimately leads to a conception of religion that, in the author's view, constitutes the most ethical, hopeful, responsible, and dynamic interpretation thereof in terms of facilitating human transformation. Within this conception, while acknowledging the role of the interpreter, the essence of religion is distinguished from its shell, and religious rulings are interpreted in light of religion's ultimate objectives. Consequently, religion moves beyond the purely doctrinal realm and enters into practical life. In this sense, religion is dynamic and governs all aspects of life—not as a guardian or custodian, but with the fundamental aim of awakening humanity's faculty of discernment.
